The Origin of the Moscow Mule
Despite its name, the Moscow Mule cocktail hails from the USA, not Russia. Most believe that sometime in the 1950s, a thrifty barman at a bar in Hollywood was clearing out the basement before his shift started. Vodka wasn’t popular back then and a few cases of the spirit were adding to the clutter under the stairs.
Being a thrifty fella (as well as an ingenious mixologist), the barman got creative. He mixed a measure of vodka with lime, added ginger beer and ice and served it (just to be different) in a jaunty copper mug. He christened it the ‘Moscow Mule Cocktail’ and it was an instant hit.

The Classic Moscow Mule Recipe
Let’s kick things off with the classic Moscow Mule recipe. Have you ever wondered how to make the perfect classic Moscow Mule? Follow these simple steps.
Ingredients
- 375 mL Bundaberg Ginger Beer
- 50 mL Vodka
- 25 mL Lime juice
- 10 mL Sugar syrup
- 2 x small pieces of ginger
- Lime wedges to garnish
Method (Note: every cocktail variation on this page is made using the same method as outlined below)
Step 1: Muddle ginger pieces in shaker and combine with alcohol, lime juice and sugar syrup
Step 2: Shake, then strain into a copper mug and top with Bundaberg Ginger Beer
Step 3: Add ice and garnish with a lime wedge

The Aussie Mule Recipe
This delicious recipe varies from the classic Moscow Mule by just one ingredient – it’s made using another Aussie classic; Bundaberg Rum. It has a smoothness that can only come from the taste of a spiced rum. Combined with Bundaberg Ginger Beer it’s a match made down under!

- 25 mL Lime juice

The Mexican Mule Recipe

- 50 mL Tequila
- 25 mL Lime juice
